Renewable Energy Is Not a Free Lunch, But That Doesn’t Make It Worthless
| May 17, 2012 | Posted by Craig Shields under Wind Energy |

Ryan Radecki, from The Green Room at Ohio University, writes:
I agree with some of your proposed ideas on the problems with environmentally friendly forms of energy, and I used your comments about having no free lunch for energy in my essay. I also feel that renewable energy forms by themselves are not helping, but the combination of many types of renewable sources is our future. Would you mind reading my blog at http://ryansfuturefuels.blogspot.com I would like to have your perspective.
Ryan:
I agree with the basic idea, i.e., the pros and cons / no free lunch concept. But I think your perspective here is too harsh and a little unfair. Read More

“Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies” on the Outdoor Talk Network
| August 16, 2011 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Science |
Each week, I get several very kind and sincere requests to interview me — normally on a radio show — regarding my last book. In fact, I just got off an hour-long interview with Jim Slinsky, who has been hosting the Outdoor Talk Network for decades. He’s a terrific guy, whose program is picked up by 53 stations in 24 states; I was his 1261st show!
But when I hung up the phone from the interview and checked my email, I saw that I had received one that read:
I disagree on the need to wean ourselves off fossil fuel, and I disagree with the premise of the book: “There is no doubt that the migration to clean energy is among the most pressing issues of our time.”
However, maybe the author can change my mind. My review will be objective, but if I think the author is stating falsehoods, I will say so in a review.
If you want to take that chance, please send me a print copy for review.
Jonathan DuHamel
Well, I like a challenge, but I try not to be a total moron. So a quick Googling of this guy shows that while he is a charming and compelling writer, he was apparently born without a sense of fair play. In his piece “Your Carbon Footprint Doesn’t Matter” (you’ll have to find it yourself if you’re interested, as I’m not giving it a backlink), he carefully hand-selects and twists certain numbers, before concluding:
You can do your part; just stop driving your car. The average family car puts out 5.5 tons of CO2 annually and is theoretically responsible for a temperature rise of 0.00000000000311ºC, three one-hundred-billionths of a degree. You can be so proud.
Actually, I AM so proud. In truth, and I think you know this, Jonathan, we really can make a difference in the outcome of our civilization. Sorry; I see where you’re coming from, pal. If you want to buy my book on Amazon and chop it up, go for it.
Mendocino College Selects “Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies”

I’m happy to report that Orion Walker, a professor at Mendocino College in Northern California, has decided to include “Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies” as part of the required reading for his course “Introduction to Cleantech” this fall. I spoke with him on the phone just now, and volunteered to come up and speak to the class; we’ll try to make that happen.
Promoting "Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies" — What Might This Be Like?
| November 17, 2010 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Business |

I didn’t create Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies with the aspirations of becoming the J.K. Rowling of clean energy. I honestly just wanted to have a book that answered people’s questions about a certain subject – albeit it an important one – a short, readable piece that would be appealing to whoever happened to have an active curiosity on the subject.
But now that the book’s available, I’ve decided to try to promote it a bit, as long as that can be done without too much cost or time out of my day. To that end, I’ve engaged a group of folks to try to get me some radio and television interviews, as that certainly seems to be the main way we hear about new books in our world today.
I’m trying to anticipate what this will be like – being on the other end of the flow of questions and answers from my normal role as interviewer. In particular, the experience is rooted in the unknown: when I’m asking the questions, there are no real surprises. But when I’m on the other side, I have to wonder: What question is next? Read More
Renewable Energy — Facts and Fantasies: Tales from Launch Day
| November 7, 2010 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Business |

A funny thing happened when we launched Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies last week. Of course, I was hoping it would do well in the categories to which Amazon.com had assigned it: energy, engineering, and physics. And while it went to number one for a few days in both energy and engineering, it got massacred in physics.
It seems that Steven Hawking, by far the most famous physicist on Earth, had just launched his new book. And was there any controversy that may have spurred his book sales even higher than they otherwise would have been? Read More
Talking about "Renewable Energy – Facts and Fantasies"
| August 4, 2010 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Business |
Have you seen the book authors on the great talk shows who chat without a single flub or lag in response to any of hundreds of different questions? That’s the guy I aspire to be. I’m not there yet, but practice makes perfect. Yesterday, I taped two shows in which 2GreenEnergy business manager George Alger interviewed me for a local cable access program.
It reminded me how much easier it is asking than answering the questions. Having said there, I think there’s hope; I actually did fairly well in my estimation – and I’m bound to get better from here.
