About Rona Fried, Contributor to “Renewable Energy Facts and Fantasies” – Activism and the Media in Clean Energy
| August 1, 2010 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Politics |
For 14 years, Rona Fried has worked hard to tell an important story: there are numerous, potentially profitable businesses and investment opportunities built around sustainable living practices. Her website, SustainableBusiness.com boasts over 100,000 unique visitors per month – each coming to learn more about this exciting subject. The interview here was the book’s chapter called “Activism and the Media in Clean Energy.”
Sustainable Business started in 1996, as one of the first websites at the dawn of the Internet. At that time, the state of the industry was completely different than it is now; it was fairly small, fragmented community of people spread around the world that were interested in this. What was most useful about using the Internet at that time was its ability to find people all over the planet who were not connecting with each other and bringing them together.
2GreenEnergy Heads to The City

I’m headed for New York later today for a series of meetings — some with people frequently mentioned here. I’ll be having dinner Monday night on the Upper West Side with Rona Fried, whose SustainableBusiness.com has formed a vibrant partnership with 2GreenEnergy to promote and deliver consulting services. From there, it’s across the Hudson for Tuesday’s webinar with financial analyst Bill Paul. Finally, it’s a drive to Boston for a day packed with talks with heavy-hitters in solar.
I’ll give your regards to Broadway.
Sustainable Agriculture

I was just editing my book’s chapter on media, which features an interview with Sustainable Business’s Rona Fried, which made me think about sustainable agriculture — one of her favorite subjects. No sooner had a saved the file did I note an email from another person I respect greatly, Tom Blakeslee, discussing the same subject.
Tom writes:
I’m flying to Denver Saturday to be with Abe Collins, who is starting a company to sequester carbon by rehabilitating degraded land by grazing cattle on it. Here is the site of a charity spreading the word about the method, called holistic management. It turns out that undoing the damage man has done to the land is by far the cheapest way to sequester carbon quickly. The carbon is in the biotic community that we have poisoned with nitrogen fertilizers and other bad farming methods, particularly since the “green revolution.” They have a 3-D computerized way to guide people through the process created by Alan Savory, whose son is on the staff.
This is quite powerful stuff; I urge everyone to come up to speed on the latest technologies here. Here’s Tom’s latest column on the subject.
Sustainable Business and 2GreenEnergy

I made another video using Windows Movie Maker just now, to promote our relationship with SustainableBusiness.com. I take a certain joy in making this videos. I know I’m not Steven Spielberg in film-making, nor James Earl Jones in voice-overs — but it really is fun trying to get this done with reasonably good delivery and no major screw-ups.
I’ve enjoyed getting to know Rona Fried and working with her to co-promote sustainable living products and services. She’s extremely bright, as that Ph.D. after her name suggests, but she’s also very dedicated to the cause. Her website has been a beacon of commitment to environmentalism for 14 years. Impressive stuff.
2GreenEnergy and SustainableBusiness.com

An important component of last week’s trip to New York City was a set of meetings with a few key players in clean energy content. As an example, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Rona Fried, 14-year veteran of one of the most solid Internet “properties” in the industry: SustainableBusiness.com.
Perhaps it’s naivety on my part, but I don’t feel at all antagonistic to the people who, on the surface, appear to be direct competitors of 2GreenEnergy. Each of us have good reason to support one another, insofar as we are all rising together as the world catches onto the growing importance of the industry, and realizes the impact that is being created by the migration to renewables, energy efficiency, sustainable products, and environmentally friendly ways of life.
When we sat down, Rona asked with a wry smile, “Why are you here, Craig?” I felt like I was Kevin Kostner’s character in Field of Dreams, as I replied with words like, “I’m not sure. I just feel I’m supposed to meet you.” Three hours went by in the space of what seemed like 15 minutes. Rona was kind enough to take me to JFK; I almost missed my plane because I didn’t notice the time going by.
We’re working out a host of collaborative relationships that I know will bear rich, ripe fruit. I’ll write more as they develops.
