Christine O'Donnell – Cute as a Button, But Needs a New Career
My mother is not concerned that Christine O’Donnell dabbled in witchcraft. I suppose I’m not either. My concern is she dabbles in ignorance – in fact, she frolics in it. How does a person run for public office — let alone senate — who doesn’t have the vaguest understanding of the US Constitution? Here she is, debating her challenger in the Delaware senate race. Skip to the end if you’re bored.
It will be really interesting to see if this Tea Party stuff has any staying power with Americans. Of course, this is coming from a guy who laughed when he first heard rap music and told his friends: “Can you believe that? This garbage will be gone in about two weeks.”
One of several things about the Tea Party that concern me is the lack of civility. Although neither side is totally innocent, by an order of magnitude the Tea Party side is worse.
Representative Barney Frank conducted a Town Hall meeting. People may have legitimate differences of opinion with Rep. Frank, but the way they conducted themselves at the Town Meeting was inexcusable. When Rep. Frank began to answer a question, he was heckled. The conversation went something like this:
Frank: You asked me a question. Are you going to let me answer?
Response: More heckling.
Frank: If you didn’t want me to answer, why did you ask the question?
Response: More heckling.
Finally Rep. Frank finally shamed them into shutting up. Unfortunately, that sort of behavior seems to be typical of the Tea Party types.
Generally, I try to understand both sides of an issue. However, I’ve given up on trying to understand the Tea Partiers. I become so put off with their attacks, canards, and aspersions, some of which are even obscene, that I cannot understand what they may be trying to say.
I’m reminded of a roommate I had in 1970. It was impossible to discuss president Nixon with him. Whenever Nixon’s name was mentioned, he’d say in a mocking tone, “Tricky Dicky. Tricky Dicky.” Although he probably had valid reasons to dislike Nixon, that kind of attitude is not exactly edifying.
I hear you. All I can say is that in the few months I’ve been reading your comments, I’ve come to see that you truly are able to see both sides of an issue — and that in itself makes you a rare breed. I’m reminded of Aristotle’s remark: “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/1152.html
