I differ with Frank on my opinions as follows
1 Solar Power – providing that the home either is so remote that no grid connection can be viably installed in which case, a solar array with batteries can be the cheapest option, or you are in a sunny area, and use the grid as your battery i.e. export spare power, and import it back when the sun does not shine enough to meet your needs.
2 Solar Heat – makes sense for heating water but not for space heating except for special situations such as very sunny regions at high altitude. Even there, you may be better using a Trombe wall or roof and drawing in warm solar heated air during the heating season whenever available.
3. Wind turbines – in a domestic situation are seldom worth the expense as in most areas, particularly in urban conurbations, wind speeds are too low at the installed height of small turbines.
4. Hydrogen Fuel Cells – not renewable, but high efficiency. I think Methane fuel cells used in combined heat and power mode will possibly become viable in the near future.
5. Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems – these I think are best suited to district heating and cooling of groups of houses, and installed at the time of construction using trenches rather than boreholes. This situation will combine very cost effectively with solar water heating – again on the district system.
6. Biomass boilers – for farmers of people in remote areas with ready access to low cost biomass who do not mind a little work, these are ideal.
7. Micro hydro- great if you can get it! in practice very few homes have access to a suitable stream.
