Tesla Model S Is “Car of the Year”

Nice to see the Tesla Model S win Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year.” It’s the first time in the magazine’s 64-year history that the prize hasn’t gone to an automobile with an internal combustion engine.  Writing for Motor Trend, editor-at-large Angus MacKenzie sums it up: “It drives like a sports car, eager and agile and instantly responsive. But it’s also as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce, can carry almost as much stuff as a Chevy Equinox, and is more efficient than a Toyota Prius.”

I want one!

Yeah, now all I need is the $85,000 I would need for the option that suits my commute distances and driving style. It is a pretty luxurious package. I wonder, though, if there will be adapters to use the Tesla “superchargers” charging stations for other electric cars. If so, that would be a great private boost to the electric infrastructure. If not, then it’s kind of a Beta vs VHS thing.

Interesting point. IMO, we’re a very long way from figuring out who pays for what as far as EV charging is concerned. I’ve been going to conferences on EV adoption for four years, even speaking at a few, and I’m not sure we’re any closer to having this figured out now than we were then.

For now, EVs are for drivers with daily commutes under 100 miles round trip. Fortunately, 78% of Americans drive under 40 miles per day, so that’s not really the gating factor.
