Needed: Writers of CleanTech Grant Applications

I need to expand the capacity of “Associates” team in the arena of writing grant applications for our clients in cleantech.  I’m looking for people who have experience in applying for grant funding for cleantech ventures from a huge variety of public institutions:

Federal Level:

• Department of Energy, including DoE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)  and the national labs, e.g., Argonne, Oak Ridge, NREL, etc.

• All opportunities at grants.gov, including the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR).

• Department of Defense, including DARPA, e.g., the U.S. Army’s Advanced Vehicle Program

• Department of Transportation, headquartered in Colorado.

• Department of Labor – looking for grants whose purpose is to grow the number of well-paying jobs

State Level:

• California’s EISG (Energy Innovation Small Grant), part of the CEC (California Energy Commission), which includes grants for “New and Innovative Technology”.

• New York’s New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)

• Oregon’s “Drive Oregon” program, looking for grants in alternate fuel transportation and their grant programs.

Other:

• Utilities – certain utilities are required to plow a percentage of their profits back into grants to innovators in energy efficiency, renewables, etc.

• School districts

If you’re interested, or if you know anyone who may be able to help and is currently looking for work, I hope you’ll let me know.

I can certainly confirm that the writing process is not easy.
I was recently involved in writing an application for EU funding for a community electrification system to provide basic electrical services to small groups of homes in Africa.
We employed the services of a specialist company to advise us of which programs to apply through, and to guide us through the application process. Initially, we thought that they would do most of the writing of our application for us, however in fact we had to do most of our own writing as their writers didn’t have sufficient knowledge of our system to write the technical parts of the document – they did however help us structure and edit the application into the appropriate format, helped us with the business / financial planning aspects and assisted us in complying with the rather complex requirements which applicants must meet.
There are several components to the writing process involving as it does the need to write the technical, social impact, business plan and financial details of the proposal in a huge amount of detail – written into a complex format dictated by bureaucratic and administrative considerations.
To make matters worse, the administrators who dictated the format in our case would appear to have had limited technical / scientific education so that the format was in places a rather poor fit for the information which must be included, and included misuse or confusing application of scientific units. The documents tend to run to hundreds of pages including appendices with much repetition – but just enough variation to prevent simple cut and paste. The requirements, funding programs and formats change frequently, and it can be necessary to create or edit documents on a short timescale.
