From Guest Blogger Tina Samuels: Going Green in Canada
Like many countries, Canada has been busy making the environment a better place.
Their green movement focuses on finding sustainable agriculture options, families going green by saving on water and energy, switching to solar energy, and more environmental-related jobs.
There has been a green movement in Canada for many years, but it really hit a boom in the last 10 years, around the same time as in the U.S. and nearby countries.
Here is some more information on how Canada is going green:
Green Organizations
The green movement in Canada is not just up to individuals and businesses; there are also organizations dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of saving the environment.
While there are many wonderful organizations in Canada, the most notable is Deepening Roots.
Deepening Roots began in 2005 and is made up of volunteers who want to offer youth education on being sustainable, recycling and the importance of agriculture in Canada.
It is an organization that has been around almost 10 years and is continuing to make a difference. They have their own 2-acre organic garden, workshops and classes, and exposure for the health benefits of natural lifestyles.
Effects of Going Green
Throughout Canada, an important lesson is being taught on going green and joining the green movement.
All of these organizations teach the importance of physical and emotional health, and what greenhouse gases, pollutants and smog cause to children and families. They show that it often leads to respiratory diseases and even cancer.
They help educate people on protection of Canada’s forests and landscapes, improving agriculture and recycling. About how climate change is causing harsher winters and devastating trees, insects and animals in their country.
Western Canadian Cities
There has also been an influx of Western cities in Canada going green and joining the local green movement.
The urban areas have many environmental initiatives going on, starting near the end of 2012.
An organization called the Canada West Foundation is focusing on many innovations and green projects, which is improving green communities from Victoria to Winnipeg. In these areas, there is an increase in using natural resources like hydro-electricity, oil, forests and uranium.
In Calgary, there is the very first public transit system to be powered by wind, while in Edmonton, they have the largest sustainable waste processing facilities in North America. This is proof of how much Canada is changing for the better.
Green Jobs
Another thing that is consistent throughout Canada is the increase in green and environmental-related jobs. There is a significant increase in green job throughout the country.
In fact, a recent study found approximately 87 percent of the environmental employees in Canada wanting to improve the environment and that is the reason they chose their profession. The most environmental jobs are currently in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta.
And the environmental field in Canada will continue to grow, with about 44 percent of environmental companies hiring new employees within the next 2 years, according to Eco.Ca.
