A Note on Clean Energy from a Reader in Zambia
A note from a reader in Zambia:
Electricity should be safe, clean and affordable to all. Over 6 million people in rural Zambia rely on fuels such as kerosene and firewood for lighting and cooking. Such fuels are expensive and provide inferior lighting for studying and other purposes. They produce smoke and soot which are unhealthful, irritate the eyes and lungs and expose all those around them to the same negative health effects as heavy smoking. Lack of suitable rural energy is directly linked to illiteracy, poverty and health problems. The current widespread burning of kerosene and firewood for lighting and cooking respectively results in substantial carbon release and environmental pollution.
Our aim is to reduce expenditures on lighting in the long term used in the community by saving money spent on kerosene and to reduce deforestation through the reduction of the use of firewood and charcoal. Our product will improve health, communication, education and SME to the rural community via solar energy. Solar energy is free and available without caring for utilities expenses.
