From Guest Blogger Paula Sheamus: Do You Know How to Recycle Your Old Electronics?
Electronics is a great part of the constantly growing number of electronic wastes and contains different materials that can be recycled and returned for a second use by industry. Recycling will stop the pollution of nature and will prevent its contamination with heavy metals and flame retardants.
Many people are absolutely ignorant why and how they are supposed to dispose their households of their old electronic equipment. Some of them do not even know that their electronic equipment has a fatal impact on the environment and just dump these wastes wherever they find it appropriate. Some, on the other hand, do not care. Do not be one of those people!
Why should we recycle our old electronics?
The equipment that are out in the Electronic Appliances category are mainly the large household appliances, such as dish-washers, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, etc. All of them contain large amounts of metals and plastics that should be recycled. So, recycling all of this electronic equipment emits large flows of valuable materials that can be used at least once again, and this prevents contamination with toxic materials, such as heavy metals and flame retardants. Recycling of electronic appliances can help you avoid some of the disposal costs and will save you high energy bills thanks to replacing the old and inefficient appliances with some new ones. Reparation and restoration of household appliances also provides some convenience and saves money for families in need.
Recycling options and possibilities
There are a lot of service stations and places for scrap metal where you can leave your electronic appliances for recycling.
As we have already mentioned, the disposal of old electronic equipment is extremely harmful to the environment. There, of course, is a modern way of disposal of electrical wastes. All you have to do is call a licensed company. This means that a special team will come to your home and will collect your old stove, dish-washer or refrigerators free of charge. Then, the same company will leave the old equipment in a special place, where all hazardous and harmful materials will be removed in order to remain only the material that can be recycled and used once again. Recently, some of the large retail chains offer another, even more lucrative way in order to help their customers get rid of the non-working or old electronic appliances by making some discounts or giving you the opportunity or returning the old appliances and buying some new ones on special prices.
The disposal of electronics and electronic equipment that you don’t use any more in the normal household waste bins is prohibited by law. Also by law, the dealers of electronic equipment are required to include the fees for recycling and re-use in the prices of their new products, so that when one of your appliances is damaged or too old to use, you can return the electronics in the same store where you have initially bought it.
Batteries and accumulators are also a huge problem, because they don’t to electrical and electronic equipment and may not be left wherever you find it appropriate. In addition, they contain extremely dangerous substances and chemicals such as mercury, etc. and it is totally unacceptable to be disposed of together with regular household wastes and garbage. That is the reason why the exhausted and no longer working power units can be returned in the store where you have bought them from.
What happens after recycling?
The safe recycling process of home electronic appliances involves initial removal of all hazardous and harmful materials, such as gases, chemicals and heavy metals from the devices. Then the appliances are ground for a subsequent rendering, and some of the materials such as copper, steel and plastic are processed and used for making some new electronic parts or products.
