The Sierra Club, Fracking, and Really Good Writing
I don’t know what percentage of our readers here are on the Sierra Club’s email lists, but let me tell you something: they write really well. I get something at least a few times a week, and I’m always impressed with how clearly and forcefully their representatives communicate with the written language.
Of course, I happen to agree with most of the stuff I get from them, so I suppose it’s easy for me to like their style. But check out the beginning of this piece, which just arrived with subject line: Fractivate!
Dear Craig,
Let me share a nightmare with you.
Imagine that a neighbor has just told you that an oil company is about to begin fracking down the street from your home. With virtually nobody monitoring, Big Oil will force a million gallons of toxic soup, including powerful acids, down a tube and into the ground to break up soil and dissolve rock before it extracts oil and gas.
You will have no right to know what’s in the toxic soup. You will be advised not to worry, no matter how many signs appear that the toxic chemicals are polluting air, water, and farmland, as it has in other states across the country.
Is there any way to stop this nightmare?
Yes, by supporting the work we do at Sierra Club California.
Etc.
Again, I’m impressed. Keep up the good work.
