From Guest Blogger Jenny Richards: 6 Reasons Why LED Lights Are A Green Solution
Now a days, we hear a lot of chatter about the benefits of going green. But even though this is a hot topic these days and many people want to adopt a green lifestyle, they don’t know what actions can help them in their quest of going green!
Well, one of the most effective step in this regard would be to replace your older light with advanced LED light, which have been proven to be ‘Green’. Are you wondering why?
Here are a few reasons why LED light are considered to be a green solution:
LED Lights Do Not Radiate Heat: We all know how our traditional light bulbs heat up when we leave them switched on for some time! This happens because these light bulbs cannot convert all the incoming energy into light and emit the remaining energy in the form of heat. At small level, this emitted heat makes the bulb’s surface hot. At big level, for example when multiple bulbs are present in a room, the heat emission can also increase the temperature of the area, hence enhancing the air conditioning requirements.
Quite contrastingly, LED reflectors have very high electricity to light conversion efficiency, as high as 90% in most cases. This high conversion efficiency implies that there is minimal heat loss and consequently minimal risk of any room temperature rise due to lighting.
LED Lights Do Not Contain Harmful Chemicals: The compact fluorescent lights(CFLs) are often termed as close competitors of LED lights, since they are also energy efficient to some extent. However, when it comes to being environmental friendly, CFLs are nowhere close! This is because of the presence of mercury inside these bulbs which is very hazardous for public health and environment. As per calculations, one CFL bulb contains as much as 4 to 5 milligrams of mercury, while on the other hand LED lights do not contain any hazardous chemical.
LED Lights Consume Less Energy: As compared to compact fluorescent lights, LED lights require up to 50% less electricity for producing the same level of illumination. In case of halogen lights, the energy savings goes up to 70% while for conventional incandescent lights, one can easily save 90% electricity by switching to LED lights. This energy saving is one the of the best way to promote green living, not only at an individual household level, but also at the national level as it decreases the load on national electricity grids.
LED Lights Last Longer: Another reason why LED lights are regarded as a green technology is that these lights have miraculously low replacement needs. The average life span of an LED light bulb is between 30,000 to 50,000 hours, as compared to 4000 hours of incandescent lights. This means that once you buy an LED light bulb, you will not have to worry about its replacement for at least 7 to 8 years. On one hand, this is good in terms of costs. On the other hand, it reduces the amount of non-biodegradable waste bulbs in the landfills, thereby helping the environment.
LED Lights Are Safe And Durable: LED lights do not contain any glass components and are highly resistant to harsh weather conditions, vibrations and impact. This makes them perfectly safe to use in all type of environments, be it a house, an office or an industrial warehouse.
Moreover, these lights do not attract insects and bugs which are often seen on the surfaces of incandescent light bulbs and give an unpleasant look to the area.
LED Lights Emit Less Greenhouse Gases:A major reason why LED lights are declared to be a green solution is that the green house gas emissions associated with the LED lights are several folds lower than the other available lighting technologies. Calculations suggest that one LED light bulb can reduce GHG emissions to as much as 80% as compared to incandescent light bulbs.
