From Guest Blogger Paula Sheamus: Green Clean — What are the Benefits?

Today everybody is talking about green cleaning. This is a process that involves using eco-friendly ingredients for the preparation of cleaning products. If you want to keep fresh water clean and toxic-free, you need to consider green cleaning.

The benefits of green cleaning are numerous, starting with improved health and cleaning efficiency but there are many other as well. Here we want to show you what advantages green cleaning has and how it can make your life better.

1. Cleaning efficiency

Green cleaning improves the cleaning process

Doesn’t harm surfaces
2. Safety

Reduces exposure to hazardous harsh chemicals that are highly toxic
Allows for proper storage of chemicals
3. Health

Reduces exposure to highly-toxic chemicals
Improves air quality at home
Reduces chemical allergens and dust
Reduces asthma attacks caused by chemical allergen and dust
4. Financial

Green cleaners made at home are less expensive than those you find in the market. Commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals that may irritate the skin and lungs. They are dangerous both for people and nature.

Moreover, baking soda, white vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil and other ingredients you usually have at home cost little and are always at hand when you need them. Why bother buying expensive commercial cleaners when you can use products found in the pantry.
5. Environment

Biodegradable products are non-harmful to the environment

Green cleaning products are non-toxic, non-caustic, low allergenic and biodegradable. This means that they are healthy for you and your family and that they have no impact on nature.

Using commercial cleaners releases many toxic chemicals into the environment that we all breathe in. Eco-friendly cleaning products help keep our waterways clean and minimize the impact on global climate change and ozone depletion as a result of a lowered amount of smog-producing chemicals.

Research shows that chemical-laden cleaners used once a week increase the risk of developing asthma, compared to environmentally-friendly products that lower the risk of developing asthma. According to medical records, asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases that causes many school absences worldwide.
6. Knowledge of ingredients

Preparing your own natural cleaners at home has one more benefit: you know what ingredients you put in the recipe. Whereas you never know what commercial household cleaning products consist of. The rule goes: if you cannot pronounce an ingredient or are not sure what it is, you had better not buy the product.
7. Fewer antibacterials

The American Food and Drug Administration says that antibacterial soaps may cause bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Generally speaking, they are no better than regular soaps. Experts claim that a common agent found in a bunch of soaps called Triclosan may cause hormonal and thyroid problems. The best part about green cleaning products is that they don’t usually contain antibacterial agents.
8. Better air

You know how bad most chemically-based cleaners smell. Every time you use them you need to open the window to let fresh air in. Compared to that, eco-friendly cleaning products have a wonderful aroma. Some of them are soothing to the body. Apart from using lemon or lemon juice, you can also add essential oils into your cleaning recipe. This will be some kind of aromatherapy. Give it a try.

  1. I know some people that produce soap using the glycerine created as a byproduct of them making biodiesel. Would this qualify as an environmentally friendly cleaner?
