From Guest Blogger Heather Roberts: Non-Green Household Cleaning Products to Avoid

There is a staggeringly high number of toxins hiding in most common household cleaning products on the market. The following article will give you some information on what you can expect to find in the most common cleaning products out there and how to avoid them. You may not be surprised about it, but there are many petrochemical solvents used in the products we use to clean our home. They are toxins that simply have no place in our houses, apartments and offices. The real extent of the chemicals involved inside these cleaning products is rarely shared, so you must make sure your home is free of them as much as possible.

Unfortunately for us, finding and identifying these products may be a bit of a difficult task, considering that we may not always be aware of the true nature of the chemicals involved. Although the laws that require proper labeling are in effect when it comes to cleaning products of that kind, the sellers are not forced to reveal the ingredients of said products. They are trade secrets of the corporations in question, therefore the regulations of the government are aimed toward protection of proprietary information rather than protection of the environment.

Toilet bowl cleaners often contain chlorinated phenols that act as toxins of the circulatory and respiratory systems of the body.

Window cleaners contain diethylene glycol, which acts as a nervous system depressant.

Disinfectants contain phenols which also affect the respiratory and circulatory systems as well.

A lot of common laundry detergents contain nonylphenol ethoxylate, which is a surfacant banned in Europe. It has been shown to slowly degrade into several other toxic compounds over time.

Wick deodorizers and sprays contain formaldehyde, which is a well-known respiratory irritant and possible carcinogen.

Floor cleaners contain toxic petroleum solvents damaging to the mucous membranes of the body.

Most window and all-purpose cleaners also contain Buyl cellosolve, a damaging chemicals affecting the nervous system, bone marrow, liver and kidney functions and more.

The list goes on and on and on, many chemicals who are largely ignored for the most part, which leads to a number of issues due to their long-term use that are rarely noticed due to their slow-acting intoxication of the body with small amounts. If you want to detoxify your home, you should make sure you rid yourself of any toxic cleaners that have the POISON, DANGER and WARNING labels on them, as they will likely be the most dangerous ones in your closet. Use your organizing skills and transform your home into something safe by focusing on eco-friendly alternatives instead of traditional, commercial cleaning supplies for a better, healthier lifestyle.
