Could a Variety of Jatropha Play an Important Role in Biofuels?
Those of you keeping track of the evolution of biofuels may be interested in this piece on a hybrid variety of jatropha.
Personally, I view the whole biofuels enterprise as a snooze. We’re trying to replace the source of the 15 terawatts of energy we Earthlings consume, 80% of which currently comes from burning hydrocarbons, a process that is rapidly destroying our planet. To think that a significant amount of this can come from biofuels is foolishness. We need to get excited about, and actively engaged in, only those disciplines that can create transformative change.
I note with interest the first comment: There are “non-toxic” Jatropha varieties with very low phorbol esters….(but) realistically there is not enough biofuel potential on the planet to replace our present fossil hydrocarbon consumption.
I have no idea what the first part means, but I totally agree with the conclusion.
