From Guest Blogger "Aizaute" — UK 2015 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Downward Trend: Good News For The Planet
According to a recent statistical study conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), greenhouse gas emissions are decreasing. To recall, greenhouse gas emissions – carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride – trap the heat in the atmosphere, which affects global water temperature.
Therefore, the Kyoto Protocol target should be respected by 2020 as the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced it. Indeed, in 2013, UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 23.6% compared to the level of emissions registered in 1990. This can be explained by the fact that the energy sector saw carbon dioxide emissions decrease by 15% thanks to a reduction of fossil fuels used and an increase of renewable fuels combustions coupled with wind energy.
In 2014, this tendency was confirmed with an additional decrease of UK greenhouse gas emissions by 8.4%. A reduction of 9.2% of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main cause of this decrease. The government is more than satisfied with these figures, when it was known that 82% of UK greenhouse gas emissions concerned carbon dioxide in 2013.
This general tendency was also visible in the residential sector, as UK householders prefer nowadays to invest in clean and renewable resources such as biomass boilers, solar panels, solar water heaters, heat pumps and so on. Hence, a decrease of up to 16.6% of natural gas was registered by the government.
The Office for National Statistics will publish in July statistics concerning the evolution of greenhouse gas emissions for the past 25 years, taking into account the first half of 2015. We will then be able to verify if the trend saying that UK will match its Kyoto engagements will be confirmed or if a new trend will arise.
