Cutting Ties with Fossil Fuels: The Rapid Migration to Renewable Energy
A reader who goes by “Louis” notes: We won’t be 100% free of fossil fuels anytime soon, but like when you start recycling, then composting instead of putting everything in the trash, it is a great start! When I see Germany already at 30% and electricity prices FALLING because of that, I know that we can do it too.
You are correct that we are not close to being 100% free of fossil fuels anytime soon; fortunately, we really don’t have to be. We do need to work hard and fast to get rid of coal. And electric transportation will replace oil over the next 25 – 30 years. Natural gas will go away at some point as well, but to get coal and oil out of here will be an amazing victory for humankind.
Keep in mind that all of this will happen according to a nonlinear model; the whole process is accelerated by economies of scale which are improving every day; huge sums of money are pouring into the subject from all over the world. It’s bolstered as well by other technologies: storage, smart-grid, light-weighting transportation, etc.
