Oil Companies Face Criminal Prosecution
Many of you are making an effort to keep yourselves abreast of the unfolding chain of information associated with the fossil fuel industry’s attempts to suppress the truth surrounding climate change. To that end, you should be keeping track of work emanating from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). In particular, here’s the beginning of their report called:
The Climate Deception Dossiers
Containing 85 internal memos totaling more than 330 pages, the seven dossiers reveal a range of deceptive tactics deployed by the fossil fuel industry. These include forged letters to Congress, secret funding of a supposedly independent scientist, the creation of fake grassroots organizations, and multiple efforts to deliberately manufacture uncertainty about climate change.
Readers will note that the UCS is calling upon U.S. voters to sign a petition, urging the Justice Department to initiate criminal proceedings. Of course, such efforts are already in full swing in the State of New York, regarding the prosecution of ExxonMobil, who knew with total certainty in 1981 that the world’s consumption of oil was destroying the planet, but spent a fortune over a period of 37 years to lie about the facts.
