Efficient Community--What You Can Do To Make Your City More GreenProtecting the environment should be one of the top concerns for industries and individuals alike. Environmental sustainability works best when the entire community is involved. There are steps that every citizen can take to ensure that their city operates in a sustainable way that protects the environment.

Reduce Pesticide Use

One of the leading causes of environmental damage is the overuse of pesticides. Reducing the use of pesticides in your community can take several forms. You can begin in your own home. If you have a pest problem in your house, seek organic methods of control instead of using harsh, and often toxic, chemicals. Eliminate the use of pesticides in your lawn and garden. Many organic gardening methods work better at controlling undesirable insects than chemical solutions. Another way to reduce pesticide use is to send a monetary message. Banding together as a community to only purchase produce that has been organically and sustainably grown will send a message to farmers.

Recycling Programs

If your community does not already have a recycling program, look into how you can get one started. Placing recycling containers next to trashcans in public places is a good way to encourage reusing in your area. You can also practice recycling in your own home. Before you throw anything away, try to think of an alternate use for that item. Styrofoam cups make excellent containers for starting herb plants. Empty wine bottles can be used to edge a garden pathway.

Repairs Prevent Waste

A hidden source of waste is in public structures that are in need of minor repairs. Energy can easily be lost through cracks, leaks and breaks. A cracked pipe may allow fluid seepage that wastes resources. Cracks that go unrepaired can allow sewage to leak into the ground and contaminate clean water and soil. It is much better for the environment and cheaper in the long run if these are identified and rectified right away. T. Luckey Sons, Inc. is just one company that does important repairs and planned projects that help improve our communities.

Native Plants

A surprising way to create a greener living space is to plant primarily native plants. These plants are adapted to make the most of local conditions and use as little resources as possible. Not only does this conserve water, but it also gives native birds and pollinators plenty of food and increases the yields of local crops.

The key to creating an environmentally efficient city is to take small steps toward a larger goal. Community cooperation is important. If individuals come together they can accomplish a green city together.

I agree with all the suggestions. It would surely help if people followed them. However, good as they are, following the suggestions would not eliminate the need for the world to increase energy usage to life poor people out of poverty. We still need more power generation, but from non-CO2 emitting sources.
