Greetings from the 2016 Intersolar Show
I’m in one of my (and everybody’s) favorite cities, San Francisco, for the Intersolar show. It’s hard to overstate how robust and impressive this event has become over the years, as human civilization continues to recognize the value of powering its activities with the energy from its nearest star.
My approach to shows like this is methodically working my way from one booth to the next, asking for each participant’s “elevator pitch,” scrawling down notes on my scratch pad and collecting business cards and whatever tchotchkes happen to be available. (It will be several centuries until I need to buy another ballpoint pen.) If I were forced to name my favorite product on display, I suppose it would be the offering of locally based “Beamreach,” a solar panel integrated with a plastic mounting apparatus, on the bottom of which is an adhesive, making it extremely easy to install on a flat roof without the use of any tools.
In addition to lowering the cost of labor so dramatically, there are two other extremely important advantages:
Because the panels are put into place without coming into contact with metal, they do not need to be electrically grounded.
The adhesive removes the need to penetrate the roof with fasteners, or to use ballast to hold the panels steady.
These folks sell through distribution, as well as directly to large EPCs/installers, a brilliant strategy that has already borne considerable fruit for them, both domestically and internationally. As the industry continues its geometric expansion, look for Beamreach to become one of many hundred winners within it.
