For the Love of Words
Occasionally, I like to suggest cool websites that offer fun and informative content that I believe will be of interest to readers who share my fondness for the English language. I know I’ve mentioned Dictionary.com which provides its “word of the day” as a free service.
Let me now add Wordsmith.org to my list of recommendations. Here, subscribers also receive an important word, with its definition and etymology, sent daily to their email, but it’s accompanied by a range of different tidbits, for example, a “thought for the day,” i.e., a thought-provoking quote on the human condition.
The words here are artfully grouped according to a theme that changes each week, e.g., those derived from body parts, those that describe emotions, etc.
This week’s theme was words in the news. I noticed that the words included “narcissist,” “vitriol,”and “demagogue.” Hmmm. Is that a coincidence, or is this an attempt to describe one of our US presidential candidates?
I’m not sure, but this really is a wonderful service, and, like so much in our online world, it’s totally free.
