A Contributed Post: How College Students Can Be Kinder to the Environment
Millions of individuals, groups, and companies around the world are dedicated to saving the planet. With an increasing number of businesses ‘going green’ and homeowners being educated regularly about living in more of an eco-friendly manner, it’s safe to say that all of us should be doing our bit to conserve energy and natural resources. When you’re a student, there’s never been a better time to get into good habits when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Not only does going green mean that you’ll reduce your carbon footprint, it’s also usually cheaper as you’ll be using less resources.
Online Study
Studying online, rather than going to a physical class, can be one of the best ways to improve your eco-friendliness whilst you are at college or university. Many schools will offer the option for students to take some of their classes online, or ‘distance learn’ if needed. Attending online classes means that you won’t need to drive to campus, and there’ll be fewer resources needed in classes with more students studying from home. From nursing courses to online MBA programs, online classes are usually available for all degree majors.
Recycling
Getting into the habit of recycling whilst at college is important, as it’s likely that you’ll stick with the habit for the rest of your life. Recycling materials, rather than throwing them away, is one of the best ways of preserving the earth’s natural resources and getting as much use out of everything that we use as possible. Many colleges will have their own recycling schemes, or, if nothing’s in place, you could even set one up yourself – something that would be good practice for budding entrepreneurs studying for a masters in business administration online.
Saving Energy
When you’re a student, you usually have quite a tight budget that means keeping your utility bills as low as possible is a priority. But, saving as much energy as possible doesn’t only mean that you’ll have more money to spare, you’ll also be reducing the size of your carbon footprint in the meantime. There are many simple changes that you can make to your everyday life in order to conserve more energy. For example, taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet whilst brushing your teeth will conserve water, whilst investing in energy saving light bulbs and eliminating drafts from your home will help to conserve heat.
Be Social
College students have a great opportunity to talk to others and even educate people on why it’s so important to look after the environment. Getting involved with environmental groups, campaigning, and researching on campus can not only be great fun and an awesome way of making like-minded friends, it can also look excellent on your resume once you graduate.
If you are at college, being kinder to the environment means that you’ll be able to save more and create good habits for life. Simple changes such as studying online, talking to others about the issue, and recycling can all help you to be an eco-friendlier student.
