RE: Request for Assistance to Promote Use of a More Environmentally Friendly Mode of Transportation for Urban Dwellers
Dear Minister Duguid and Minister Murray,
I am writing to request assistance in promoting the use of semi- recumbent electric assist tricycles within urban communities.
Using an electric assisted tricycle has many benefits including:
Promotes exercise and outdoor activity.
Reduces environmental impact, as operation is emission free.
Reduces traffic congestion since it is small.
Reduces the need for multiple family cars.
Reduces the need for expansive parking lots since tricycles have a small footprint and can be driven into stores, offices, and other commercial establishments that are wheelchair accessible.
Improves independence of seniors and disabled folks.
Operable in all seasons with rear wheel drive for traction.
I believe the market for such a means of transportation would be high among seniors, disabled folks, and able-bodied urbanites. People could use these tricycles to traverse the urban landscape to locations such as stores (where they may be used as shopping carts), medical offices, libraries, sports facilities, and parks.
The attached pictures should help visualize the potential benefits of wide spread use of these tricycles.
These tricycles are quiet and easy to handle with minimal tipping risk. They have a low centre of gravity and tight turning radius. They are much lighter than a scooter so loading them into a vehicle for long distance transfer does not require a special lift. These tricycles are designed to be pedalled, to coast, to be propelled like a wheelchair, or to be operated with just the motor. The step-though design allows easy access. The tricycles are equipped with a large basket for holding goods and a fairing to minimize the impact of the elements.
One way to promote the use of such vehicles might be to offer a rebate on the purchase of these tricycles such as the rebate offered on electric car purchases. Another idea is to subsidize the evaluation of using these tricycles in a few shopping centres or evaluating the use in seniors residences for transport to and from local destinations. This would create a new enterprise and jobs and promote environmentally friendly transportation using minimal resources..
Any advice you can offer to help me find a suitable manufacturer and distributor for these tricycles would also be very welcome. I have manufactured and distributed these tricycles for over 25 years, constructing over 650 units for special needs folks. I see great possibilities for a much wider use of this vehicle.
Thank you in advance to any assistance you can provide. I welcome the opportunity to speak with someone to help promote this mobility concept to reduce the use of automobiles and lower the impact on our environment.
Yours truly,
Ron McCurdy
