Science Is Indifferent To Our Beliefs
We’ve all heard the aphorism: “Physics doesn’t care what you believe.” Here’s a wonderful case in point: the U.S. Department of Energy has banned the use of the term “climate change.” It can’t get any more asinine than this, can it? (Joking. It can and will.)
From the article: “This is like telling government scientists not to mention gravity or the fact that the Earth revolves around the sun. The Trump administration can deny the reality of the climate crisis, but it can’t make it go away by simply telling government employees not to mention it anymore. This kind of anti-science meddling leads us straight back to the dark ages.”
How long before someone comes up with a euphemistic turn for the banned phrase. “Earth Fever” “Frequent fever measurements” “Green globe going brown” Maybe it is just an opportunity in disguise.
But we have also seen this sort of thing tried out in Florida and the Carolinas. Mostly it seems to be a bit of gesturing to scientists who start by defining terms. If the terms which you are trying to define are banned then it make your life more difficult.
