Quantum Physics Makes a Real Difference

Quantum Physics Makes a Real DifferenceI’ll be the first to admit that the cartoon isn’t for everyone, but it does have a couple of virtues:

1) It has nothing to do with the imploding U.S. presidency, and I figured readers could use a break from my rants on the subject.

2) It deals with quantum physics, which, if we still have a civilization here in 50 years, is bound to occupy an even more important aspect of the technologies we’ll be using at that time.

This stuff really makes one think about the incredible limitations we humans have in the way we intuit the world around us. Our perceptions are useful, but they don’t reflect reality very well at all. We evolved from hunter-gatherers because of our ability to distinguish whole objects that are roughly the size we are: mammoths, rocks, spears, etc. Given that, there is no reason to believe that we have some capacity to see things as they really are at the subatomic level. As recently as 100 years ago, we assumed that little things like electrons (and whatever might compose them) were simply tiny “things” that obeyed the same laws as marbles, cars and planets.

Wrong.
