From Guest Blogger Eileen O’Shanassy: Are Electric Cars Safe? How Features are Changing
Overall, electric cars are a green and very safe option for modern drivers. They are even getting safer as more models arrive. Most bring a number of extra benefits to the table and most people who choose to drive electric vehicles have fuel efficiency foremost in mind. Safety features for electric cars are by no means inferior to those of gas-driven cars.
With respect to conventional vehicles, electric cars match up well in the areas of safety and security. Since the introduction of electric cars, industry manufacturers have continually made safety a top priority.
Safety Testing and Protocols
To date, while there have been some electric car fires, there is every indication that electric cars are as safe, or safer from fire than gasoline vehicles. Electric vehicles must undergo rigorous testing and comply with EV-specific standards that address battery chemical spillage. Testing also considers whether the battery is secure during impact, and isolates the vehicle’s chassis from electrical shock.
Manufacturers design EVs with a lower center of gravity than most conventional vehicles. They are also quieter than conventional vehicles. One way manufacturers address the safety issue of quieter cars is by requiring EV vehicles to omit sounds at low speeds. The Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt have incorporated this option.
Plug-In Hybrids and EV Maintenance
EVs have regular maintenance schedules like any conventional vehicle. These schedules include checking the electrical motor, battery, and electronics. On the average, electric cars tend to require less maintenance than conventional cars because there are fewer liquids to change. There are also fewer moving parts to worry about. Many manufacturers are offering eight-year/ 100,000-mile warranties for their vehicle’s battery.
EV Performance
Electric vehicles are getting a reputation for handling well, especially for hairpin curves. This is likely due to weight distribution. There also appears to be less wear and tear on brakes. This is due to safety brake systems that are able to capture and retain energy that would otherwise have been lost to friction. Thus, there is less strain placed on brake pads. Overtime, owners can save money on maintenance repairs with these electric options.
Driving a safe car is easy today with so many improved safety standards and inventions. Electric vehicles are no exception and in some cases, even outstrip the competition in terms of safety features. Of course, features are only half the battle. Safe driving habits are ultimately up to the driver so next time you’re behind the wheel, take it easy!
