When It Comes To the Environment, China Is BIG
China sits atop the world in most important environmental categories. They’re simultaneously the planet’s biggest polluter, its largest investor in renewable energy, and, by far, the most ardent consumer of electric vehicles; in fact, they’re on track to sell 700,000 EVs (in China) this year, a feat that is made even more impressive when one considers that they’ve cut their subsidies in this market dramatically.
I don’t pretend to understand these people and their motivations, but they certainly do things on a grand scale.
Craig,
China has no real commitment to EV manufacture, although it likes the idea of using electric power especially in areas with surplus generation.
For that matter the Chinese have no real commitment to the environment, except as propaganda for western consumption.
The EV’s China produces are mostly of very poor construction, but cheaper to register and easier to purchase. Most Chinese “EV’s” would never comply with Western road safety regulations, and are not really viewed as “cars”.
However, it’s early days and with improving technology the future for EV’s is getting brighter all the time.

Completely off topic, but I’ve been asked to participate when I finish my US ‘Odyssey’, if I would consider Chairing a private enterprise-government funded Study Group advising on preparing the UK fishing industry post Brexit.
Some years ago I helped prepare a report criticizing the environmental damage and waste caused by EU fishing regulations.
Once the UK is free to enforce it’s own 200 mile fishing Zone the nation should re-consider it’s fishing policies to take advantage of the massive improvements in technology to study, monitor and control fishing catches.
Advances in technology could revolutionize the industry, allowing a more precise harvest of species.
The current complex, rigidly bureaucratic system has completely failed the industry, consumers and the marine environment.
A better system must be found ! I believe the UK waters are an ideal location to create a revolutionary new fishery dynamic. This could be the first obvious benefit of a successful Brexit, as it could breathe back now life and prosperity to the small coastal communities of coastal UK.
(I’ll try to ensure the project’s budget includes provision dor an American University to participate in an exchange program for post graduate Environmental Law student(s). I have the first candidate in mind already):).
