Pope Francis: Global Warming Caused by “Short-Sighted” Human Activity
The miracle of Pope Francis is his eagerness to jump into political issues and advocate so adamantly for humanitarian causes. Before his ordination, the changes through which the Catholic Church had gone over the past 1600 years could have been measured in angstroms; now they’re measured in parsecs.
Yet I wonder if he isn’t being a bit generous with his choice of the word “short-sighted,” as discussed here.
We, as a species, know precisely what we’re doing vis-a-vis the environment and its climate; it’s not that we can’t see what we’re doing or where we’re going.
The issue is that we live in a civilization that worships money. I don’t know what life is like in the Vatican, but out here, money makes the world go ’round.
Give people incentive to desecrate the environment, guess what they’re going to do?
“In this system, which tends to devour everything that stands in the way of increased profits, whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule.” – Pope Francis
