Renewable Energy News from Around the Globe–At Least a Couple of Parts of It

01Iceland-master768An article in GreenTech Media this morning asks why most of the countries in Southeast Asia are lagging behind the rest of the world in the deployment of renewable energy.  I skipped it.  The developing world doesn’t have the cash (by definition) and most of those governments are even more corrupt than the U.S.; they pay even less attention to the welfare of their people than the U.S. Congress pays to Americans’, and that’s saying a lot.

Next!

Here’s something worthwhile.  Iceland’s new prime minister is a pacifist environmentalist.  That’s Katrin Jakobsdottir (pictured), 41, chairwoman of the Left-Green Movement.

What does this mean in terms of renewable energy?  Not much, since geothermal and hydropower—provide effectively all of Iceland’s electricity and around 85% of the nation’s total primary energy consumption.

So how big is this overall? Well, you know the old saying, “As goes Iceland so goes Lichtenstein.”  Just kidding.   It’s great to see any country regardless of size, especially one of the class, decency and sophistication of Iceland heading even further in the right direction.

Do you know what Iceland did to the super-criminals whose malfeasance caused their economy to collapse in 2008?  They sent them to prison! Try to imagine anything like that kind of justice for the uber-wealthy happening here.

    Craig,

    It isn’t a crime to be “uber-wealthy” !

The US sentenced Bernie Madoff to 150 years prison, Daniel Bonventre to 10 years, and initially Eron’s Jeff Skilling received a 24 year sentence.

In contrast, the Icelandic fraudsters received less than 4 years, most under two.
