Is Iceland Bringing Geothermal Energy To China?

reykjanes-iceland-geothermal-energy-31This article is suggesting that the answer is yes, and obviously, I’d love to celebrate this idea.  But this is like saying that Washington State (with its huge rivers) is bringing hydrokinetics to (“flat as”) Kansas, that West Texas is bringing wind power to South Carolina, or that Arizona is bringing solar to Alaska.

The fact that Iceland has geothermal resources coming out of its ears means just about zero to its capacity to bring this technology, cost-effectively, to China.

Having said that, there must be some good geothermal assets somewhere in China.  Hope it works.

    Craig,

The PRC does have a quite extensive Geo-thermal industry, largely based in Tibet and to a lesser extent Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The Pamir Plateau in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region may also prove viable.

In Tibet the power produced has been utilized to promote further Chinese migration to Tibet and further destruction of Tibetan culture and suppression of local identity.

I believe in China a large proportion of geothermal energy is used for district heating rather than power generation – an activity for which lower temperature resources under 100 centigrade are well suited.
