Tough It Takes Effort, Politics and Integrity Can Walk Together
Beam Furr is currently Mayor and Commissioner for Broward County Commission District 6 in Southern Florida. 43 years ago, however, he was one of my best friends at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, best known for his gentle smile, unsinkable tolerance, and his effortless piano performances.
Initially, I was worried about Beam when I learned about the career direction he had taken, as my cynical side told me that politics and integrity were mutually exclusive, and that Beam might have been corrupted by his vocation. Yet, as I follow him on Facebook, it’s quite clear that he’s carried his kind and honest ways through his occupation as an elected official.
From a post earlier today:
Happy World Oceans Day! Thank you Jayce Birch for allowing us to promote March for the Ocean Broward on the Local 10 news this morning. We are SO excited! Charnow Park, Hollywood Beach Broadwalk 9 am. There will be reggae, non profits, a raffle, giveaways, and all kinds of fun. Bring out the family! Ft Laud High School Drum Line will lead our walk at 10 am. There’s a children’s play area with sprinklers. Dance to DJ Lance-O of Kulcha Shok while bringing awareness for plastic pollution, offshore drilling, coral bleaching, and other issues affecting our oceans. This is a free event. Hands Across the Sand photo at the end of the event.
Craig,
Congratulations to your friend. I have great respect for all those who choose elected public service and do an honest, although usually thankless, job.
Broward County is a huge responsibility being basically greater Fort Lauderdale, a city famous for its yacht harbour, a democrat stronghold, but a city not without difficulties for many of its two million inhabitants.
It’s certainly a big challenge, I wish him every success !
