Ireland Becomes the First….Who Will Be the Second?

Those of you following the fossil fuel divestment movement already know that the Republic of Ireland just became the first sovereign country to begin a methodical sell-off of its entire holdings in coal, oil, and natural gas.

I’ve already regarded these people as an honest and life-affirming lot; this comes as no surprise.

When it was pointed out that another vote is required to seal the deal, legendary environmentalist Bill McKibben wrote, “Actually, the upper house can at worst delay the bill, and that’s not expected; today was apparently the big deal.” More importantly, he wrote: “Thanks to everyone whose hard work made this possible.”  Exactly.
