Identifying Fake News Takes Hard Work Nowadays

guns_origIt used to be that fake news was fairly easy to identify.  Of course, some headlines make claims that are literally impossible (“Indian Elephant Population Triples in 2018”), where others are just so improbable (“Pope Commends Pedophiles”) that we write them off.  But, for me at least, all this has gotten much tougher recently.

When I came across: Education Secretary Considers Using Federal Funds to Arm Schools I first checked to see if it had come from humorists like The Onion or Andy Borowitz.  Then, I was heading for Snopes….when I realized: nope, this is real.  Betsy DeVos, who absolutely refuses to provide funding to public schools for better teachers pay and supplies, is looking at buying them guns.

How hard would it be for one of these people to do something laudable?  Anything; I’m not picky.

    Craig,

It seems a little extreme, but we seems to be living in extreme times.

Many teachers have served in the military, are reserve military officers, and quite a number are part time or reserves police or law enforcement officers.

It might not be such a bad idea to deputize these people as additional security to deter gun violence in schools.

The Federal, State and Local Communities have only so much money. The demands on the public purse are unlimited but the public purse is not unlimited.

Deputizing a well educated reservist teacher, and supplying that teacher with a weapon under the same rules and training as local law enforcement, and integrated with local law enforcement, may be a better use of funds than hiring far more expensive and less effective security guards.

  2. Instead of arming teachers, they could make stricter gun laws. If we were to regulate guns a little more, just like Canada, there would be so much less gun violence in the U.S.
