Learning from Iceland’s Development of Geothermal Energy
Cheap energy has created enormous wealth on this planet; in fact, this is the underlying reason for the boom in affluence experienced in the developed world over the last century.
Of course, the only reason energy is still cheap is that the world continues to ignore the externalities of fossil fuel consumption; no one’s paying the enormous cost of the long-term environmental damage in the form of climate change, ocean acidification, and the loss of biodiversity, not to mention what it’s doing to human health.
Here’s a cool little video that features Iceland and the economic experiences it’s had in developing geothermal energy, tapping into the heat that lies beneath its country’s surface. Nice going.
100% renewable energy! That’s a lot more than I thought Geothermal could provide. If it can provide that much power, we won’t even need solar or wind power (although it does help a lot). If we’re to follow Iceland’s footsteps, I’m sure we could stop using fossil fuels and get on track for preventing global warming.
