Note on Trump, Tech, and China
I have a great deal of respect for my colleague Fritz Maffry and his insights on the technology sector, and I certainly don’t want to make fun of him. But here are a few lines from his most recent contribution that I’d like to comment on. He writes:
Trump and China: awakening to the necessary future priority of competing focused on technology….Trump is getting an education on tech; it is notable that the CEOs of a great many tech communities are shuttling to DC to talk about competitive issues in tech and the future. Trump is realizing that you cannot stunt tech and win the future, despite his having relatively few natural instincts for technology.
That’s a very charitable way of putting it. In my view, Trump:
• As you point out, has very little understanding of tech, and even less in getting an education on the subject. Doesn’t read reports, even those that are brief and dumbed-down.
• Knows he is clueless about leading the country in a positive direction, and actually couldn’t care less about anything other than his own interests.
• Most importantly, has lots of bigger fish to fry, given that he is besieged by legal attacks coming from dozens of different directions.
Again, not to ridicule Fritz, but imagine you’re the president and:
• The whole world just found out with totally certainty that you committed at least two felonies during your campaign.
• It appears that your son, son-in-law, and numerous associates are going to be indicted soon.
• You have profited enormously from your office, in clear violation of the U.S. Constitution.
• Your sham charity is under investigation.
• Law suits against you and your businesses are piling up all over the world.
• There is no smoking gun on collusion, but it sure looks imminent–and you know exactly what you did.
How interested in learning about artificial intelligence would you be?
Craig,
Surely even you don’t believe your wish list of the iniquities committed by President Trump is actually true?
It’s obvious that such absurdly silly accusations are unsupportable by any evidence, and are the product of your deep frustration that you still can’t accept the result of the 2016 election in which your heroes were defeated.
my advice is stop obsessing, to move on by focusing on more relevant events. (not that I don’t enjoy reading a good rant 🙂 ).
The President is actually enjoying a boost in the polls, success after success in foreign policy, while the public is steadily losing faith in the Mueller Inquiry and endless press appetite for scandal.
I know you can’t bear to face the truth, but both the Guardian and NYT lost a great deal of credibility with the publication of the Paul Manafort-Julian Assange conspiracy story. The story was a complete fabrication designed to influence the mid-terms.
Relatively few American care about President Trump’s historical dalliances, or business dealings, by this time they’re hardly news.
The obsession of the “never Trumpers” and the anti-trump media with old supposed scandals that have nothing to do with the prosperity of the American people, is gaining, not losing, support for the President.
In contrast, the President is focusing on the issues which directly effect on the incomes and lifestyles of the American people.
The President is in no danger(and never was) of being removed from office. (His win in the Senate proved that). The Mid-term elections proved the public want politicians to focus in policy, not scandal or infighting.
Important events are occurring both in the US and globally. The implosion of President Macron in France, will affect the EU. The arrest of the “father of the EV”, Carlos Ghosn in Japan will have as yet unknown consequences.
The arrest of Ms Meng Wanzhou, Global CFO and daughter of the founder of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd will have massive ramifications as President Xi Jinping counts Huawei’s CEO Ren Zhengfei, Zhou Daiqi, CCP Party Boss and Chairman Liang Hua as important friends and supporters.
The chaos of PM Teresa May’s Brexit compromise (Deal leaving no one happy) will also have ramifications if not ratified by the British Parliament, and even more disruption if it passes.
In light of these events, the increasingly sleazy obsession about what ever Mueller can make of allegations about payments made by the President’s former lawyer to a porn star long before The President took office, seem absurdly trivial.
But the fact that you as an advocate for “decency, truth, justice and propriety” would so readily betray all your principles to rant against the President is very disturbing hypocrisy.
So far no official has stated any “crime” was committed, no official has even accused the President of any crime.
These are simply reports about what Cohen may say as part of a plea deal to get a discount for charges involving dishonesty unrelated to the President or his campaign.
Even Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, a constitutional right you once seemed to believe was valuable in American law ?
When did your obsession grow to such hatred you decided to abandon all pretense at decency or fair process and start hoarding pitchforks in preparation for arming the lynch mob?
Don’t pay any attention to marcopolo (whoever that is), he is at least as delusional as Trump himself, which his own rant proves.
