Coal: More Good News
The other day we reported that the UK had gone more than four full days without generating a single Watt-hour of electricity from coal.
Today we get news from this side of the pond: In just 12 years, Ohio has reduced coal from its grid-mix from 87% down to 47%. Even as President Trump is threatening to revive the coal industry, we see this story of glad tidings repeating itself elsewhere around the country, especially in the Midwest and East, where several coal-fired power plants have shut down in the past several years.
All this is happening as the result of market forces; coal is losing out to cheap and abundant supplies of natural gas, as well as solar and wind. Lord only knows what will happen when we demonstrate that we actually care about the quality of our environment by pushing the development of clean energy.
