Climate Change: Looking Ahead
Apparently, I’m not the only one foretelling what’s going to happen when climate change starts to have increasingly heavy impact on human civilization. In particular, while the hoards of poor people are going to face unprecedented levels of suffering, the rich few will fare quite well–and the author of the article linked above has nailed this precisely.
Making this prediction doesn’t require any cleverness at all, nor is there any real uncertainty. Imagine a world marked by shortages of food and water, of devastating storms, and of chaos caused by millions of climate refugees desperate for higher ground. Regardless of the toll this takes on mainstream humanity, there will always be fine champagne and security forces to provide safety for those who can afford it.
Craig,
Indeed there will be new markets for the rich! Just think of the huge increase in sales of sackcloth and ashes for all those aspiring prophets of doom and despair ? Finally I’ll be able to find a market for all those “end of the World is Nigh” signs I got stuck with when the ban the Bomb, movement fell out of favour.
Happy days indeed!
Come to think of it, you live in a fashionable beach-side resort town, don’t you ? Shouldn’t you be moving to the mountains?
In fact, beach-side properties continue to increase in price while sales of islands are booming!
Hmmm,… perhaps if you hope hard enough, a disaster might occur, but then again, I suppose it’s like all those other failed prophesies, it helps you avoid doing anything practical doesn’t it?.
