It’s a Sin To Kill a Mockingbird

image4To Kill a Mockingbird was published on this date in 1960.  As country lawyer Atticus Finch tells his daughter Scout, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

This has real meaning in today’s world, where we’re arresting church pastors whose religious convictions dictate that they should leave water in the Mexican deserts, to save the lives of families who, starving and fearing for their lives, desperately flee their homelands to find food and safety.

    Craig,

That’s one interpretation, on the other hand they could be seen as being irresponsible sentimentalists encouraging illegal migration, thereby aiding and abetting the swarms of criminal gangs who pray upon these folk.

It’s a difficult dilemma which will not be helped except by resolute, responsible and effective policies.

As long as the ‘lure’ remains, the illegal migration tragedy continues. Remove the ‘lure’ and the problem ceases. Like most criminal activity, the only sure way of reducing offending is lowering the chance of success.

The old expression “being cruel to be kind” seems very applicable.
