Dwight Eisenhower’s Worst Nightmare Has Come True

BMW-i3-white-1In response to this piece reminding us of Eisenhower’s warning about the military industrial complex, my colleague, Plug-In America co-founder Paul Scott writes:

The single most effective action the average American can take to defeat these people is to stop using dirty energy. The oil, coal, and gas industries spend hundreds of millions keeping Republicans in office.  There are now very affordable electric vehicles that use no oil. Solar and wind energy are now cheaper than dirty electricity generated from coal and gas. Make the switch and stop funding your enemies!

As always, Paul has nailed it.  The power to turn this around lies only partly with the corrupt politicians in Washington; primarily, it lives with us, insofar as we vote with our wallets.

Yes, some of us are in better positions to make this transition than others.  If you rent, you’re not putting solar on your roof.  If you make hellacious daily commutes, a low-cost EV with a low range may not work for you.  If you’re waiting for the go-to energy source for predictable but incremental loads on the grid to get cleaner, a Prius is a viable option.  (Mine, which I drive gently, gets 51 MPG.)

In any case, Paul has re-introduced a critically important concept: the ball is in our court.

    Craig,

Don’t get me wrong, I like the little Toyota Prius. But as an EV technology advocate, if I lived in the US (especially California) I would feel a complete hypocrite if I bought a Prius instead of a Tesla.

Anyone, I spoke to about climate change could quite rightly accuse me of mere “tokenism” or insincere “symbolism”.

I find leading by example far more convincing than a mere token show of “political correctness”.
