Primer on Plant-Based Meat

_108239490_vegdiet_index_getty_3Here’s a good, albeit fairly general, article on plant-based meat: how it’s finding its way onto restaurant menus,  its capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, etc.

IMO, the most amazing thing about this whole arena is the taste; I find it indistinguishable from beef, especially served in the context of a burger with the usual accouterments; I was astounded the first time I bit into an Impossible Burger, that’s for sure.  It’s also sometimes served with vegan cheese, which is half-decent as well.

Maybe you’re concerned that one-quarter of our planet-baking emissions comes from food, and this forms a reason to adjust your diet.  Maybe you’re ready to withdraw your support of the unimaginably cruel factory meat industry.  Maybe you want to feel better and live longer by ridding your colon of rotting animal parts.  The reason, or combination of reasons, doesn’t matter.

Doing the right thing for yourself and the world around you normally requires a sacrifice.  That, my friends, is no longer a requirement.

    Craig,

One again, if you wish to continue evangelizing the imaginary benefits of eating a chemically produced synthetic protein substitute, by all means, knock yourself out.

But if everyone adopted your beliefs, a whole range of environmental and social downsides would occur.

For a beginning, it would be a very sad day for the nearly 6 billion carnivorous pets on the planet and their owners. (no, cat’s cats eat vegetables).

But, then again, since Beef, pork, lamb and whole range of other game consumption continues to expand, I don’t suppose your enthusiasms really matter.
