Catastrophe in Madrid–COP 25 Was a Disaster
If it’s possible, it seems that the fight against climate change is actually going backwards.
The United States and the European Union, as well, are refusing to assume any responsibility for the damage that their emissions are causing and their subsequent inaction. There is no effort to take any genuine and meaningful action with enormous loopholes that will enable their big polluting companies to continue to pollute, thus guaranteeing that the world hurtles through the 1.5-degree limit.
As activist Asad Rehman puts it: (COP 25 was a meeting of) governments with no willingness to act and actually acting not in the interests of their citizens, but acting in the interests of their big polluting companies. And it was an absolute disaster.
Craig,
The rest of the world just realized that once President Trump removed the US credit card, suddenly any enthusiasm for COP25 disappeared !
Even the attraction of issuing a new sanctimonious and “symbolic” agreement seemed to much bother after the reality of the pointless, but much hailed 2015 Paris Agreement was signed by 195, although only 182 became party to the Agreement.
Since then, the entire movement has become increasingly irrelevant to most people. bizarre characters like Greta Thunberg have reduced serious debate to a mere farcical spectacle
Much has been lost.
Craig,
Speaking of the impishly twee little Scandinavian globetrotter, her latest complaint concerned being relegated to be seated on the floor of a train carriage due to over crowding.
The reality is somewhat less romantic. Greta Thunberg and her considerable entourage traveled in the exceedingly luxurious First Class section, with soft leather seats and increased legroom, full service attendants etc.
only hours before, she had informed a startled audience in Turin Italy, “I would have leaders put up against against the wall if they continue running away from their climate obligations !
From ‘Green’ to ‘Red’, in one quick statement.
