Meme On Trump Supporters: Cute, But Incorrect
This may be cute, but not all Trump supporters are morons. Strangely enough, there are some highly intelligent racists; no one thinks Stephen Miller or Steve Bannon are idiots; they’re despicable people, but they’re not idiots.
A far larger group, however, is amoral rich people, who care very little about anyone but themselves. The concepts of community, support, sharing, common good, “it takes a village,” “everyone deserves a chance,” etc., are totally meaningless, or, for many of them, anathema. Many of them can see that Trump is a sociopathic criminal who is destroying our country, but they’re getting stupid rich in the process, and they figure he’ll be gone before any permanent damage is done.
An example of their amorality is their lack of concern for the environment. Famines? Floods? Lifeless oceans? No remaining rainforests or wild animals? Whole populations displaced? If you’re worth $200 million, these things won’t affect you too terribly, and if you don’t care, you are, in my estimation, a grossly defective human being, but there is no one who can force you to give a damn.
Right now, the United States is on a gently sloping path towards obscurity and irrelevance on the global scene, via deep deficit spending, kleptocracy, and withdrawal from important industries, e.g., cleantech. The national debt is skyrocketing out of control, while our infrastructure falls apart. China, which famously does not conduct wars, has directed those trillions of dollars into domination of world commerce.
The reason this is important is that the latter group of people are really the only ones who can turn this around. Thus far, most of what we’ve seen from the billionaire class is the greed and apathy for which it is known–or, worse, the aggressive dismantling of the federal government. But it doesn’t have to end up that way. We need to count of the core integrity of some of these people to come along change the course of the enormous (but sinking) ship that is the United States.
