Beautiful Statement from Climate Activist Greta Thunberg
Humankind is being put to the test with its response to COVID-19. To what degree can we come together as a species, put aside our surface differences, and contribute as one to a critically important common goal?
This exercise here and now can be viewed as the opening act for what’s quite likely to be a far tougher challenge: climate change mitigation and adaptation. How will we respond when entire populations are being displaced due to famine, super-storms, and sea-level rise? Yes, we can build sea-walls to protect Boston, Manhattan, and Washington DC. Do we propose to do the same along the entire coastlines of Somalia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam?
History contains no precedent for the human skill-set required for civilization to survive what’s about to occur. Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t make it happen.
One thing’s for sure: we’re going to need leaders, and they need to be completely honest and selfless. Not sure we (at least here in the U.S.) are headed in the right direction with respect to that.
