Does Traditional Energy Technology Transfer into Renewables?
When I first got into the renewable energy field, my brother asked me a perfectly good question: why don’t the oil giants use their financial might to get into the industry. I gave him two answers:
They have no incentive to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewables, but rather to delay it as long as possible (and they’re damn good at this), and
The specific core competencies of oil exploration don’t transfer well to things like building and installing solar and wind farms, hydrokinetics, etc.
At this point, the former for the two is clearly still in place, but it appears I may have been at least partially incorrect about the latter. Check out this article on how Norway is leveraging technology from the traditional energy field into renewables. Impressive.
