Should Catholics Vote for Trump? The Author of This Book Apparently Thinks So
I won’t be reading the book mentioned here, so I can only speculate on the reasoning it lays out as to why Catholics should vote to re-elect the president.
Much has been written in an attempt to understand why most self-described devout Christians favor Trump; it really is the ultimate paradox, considering that our president and his supporters have nothing whatsoever in common with Christ and his teachings re: caring for the poor and sick, disdain for greed, the value of mercy, the love of peace, compassion, and forgiveness. (Can you think of a less forgiving person than the ever-bitter, spiteful Donald Trump, taking revenge on his critics at every turn?)
Trump doesn’t go to church, and when asked, couldn’t name a single passage from the Bible. He does, however, know how to pander for votes, and one of his key tactics at this point is reversing the pro-choice platform he held until recently. It was as recently as the 2016 presidential campaign when a political committee supporting one of Trump’s Republican rivals unveiled an ad slamming his views on abortion, complete with footage from a 1999 interview in which he declared, “I am pro-choice in every respect.”
Now, out of political necessity, he’s become radically anti-abortion, but his supporters pretend to be unaware of his duplicity. In fact, they can’t get enough of his mighty rhetoric, for example: “Today as President of the United States, I am truly proud to stand with you,” he told a crowd of thousands braving the cold on the National Mall. “Unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House.”
I’m afraid these good people have simply been duped. They weren’t the first group to be bamboozled by the conman-in-chief, and they won’t be the last.
