Caution: Euphemisms Introduce Inaccuracies, Diminish Impact
Former Republican Secretary of State and retired general Colin Powell said Sunday that President Donald Trump has “drifted away” from the Constitution, adding to a growing list of former top military officials who have strongly criticized the President’s response to the nationwide protests surrounding the police killing of George Floyd.
“Drifted away from?” How about: flatly rejects, blatantly ignores, thumbs his nose at, has nothing but contempt for, continues to urinate on, or runs roughshod over?
The other day, we heard John Kelly correcting Trump’s claim that he (Trump) fired his Defense Secretary James Mattis, saying, “The president has clearly forgotten.”
Seriously? Is there anyone who believes that Trump forgot about one of the most important moments of his mortally wounded presidency? He obviously lied, a prevarication that joins a mere 21,000 others he’s made in the last three and a half years.
