What’s Up with Trump’s Plummeting Approval Ratings?

For a long time after Trump leaves office, historians will be arguing about the proximate cause of the steep decline in his approval ratings.  After all, he has survived hundreds of scandals and embarrassments, so what changed in early/mid-2020?

For my money, it’s statements like that of General McCaffrey here.  He joins in with perhaps 7 – 8 other top military leaders in pointing out that Trump is an active danger to everyone and everything in the country.

Maybe you like Trump for his overt racism, or his cruelty to children, or his long history of sexual assaults on women. Maybe it’s his coddling of the world’s dictators and alienation of U.S. allies.  Perhaps its his eagerness to sacrifice the lives of tens of thousands of Americans to COVID-19, simply to increase the chances of his reelection.

Here’s something you will not like, however, regardless of who you are: the viewpoint of the vast majority of the most senior people who have served this country with competence and honor their entire adult lives, who now are unequivocal in warning us that everything we hold dear is in grave jeopardy if we don’t remove Trump from office.

You can be one of the most revolting people on Earth, and you will still have to say, “Know what?  These people need to be taken seriously.”

Trump is merely a symptom of a culture of greed and a government of the bought and the bribed, but oh boy, what a painful symptom.

Such a ragingly toxic symptom certainly needs to be addressed, but the disease itself must be cured, or other symptoms will present, likely even worse.

After all, a great many folks thought we couldn’t do worse than Bush the Lesser. They thought wrong.

Yes, I was certain that Bush 43 would join Nixon and be regarded as the worst presidents in my lifetime. Wrong, wrong, wrong. They appear honest and intelligent in comparison to 45.
