Portland Oregon’s “Wall of Moms”
Things started heating up on the streets of Portland a few days ago, where heavily armed and unidentified federal troops clashed with protesters in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, much to the chagrin of essentially everyone concerned. Of course the protesters, almost all peaceful, resented being tear-gassed, beaten with batons, and hauled off in unmarked vehicles. Other people who objected to the paramilitary assault included the state’s governor and the city’s mayor, whose police forces were familiar to the community and were more than adequate to address any vandalism associated with the marches.
As could have been predicted, the situation worsened as time was passing, as the troops were seen to provoking resistance, by beating up clearly peaceful people, including medical doctors and defenseless young ladies. This, again predictably, caused the crowds of protesters to swell even further.
Eventually, a brand new set of protesters took to the streets: the so-called “Wall of Moms,” a few hundred women, all mothers, many grandmothers, who came out to make a few important points, chiefly:
1) Trump’s use of armed troops, a tactic taken purely to show America how much tougher he is than his opponent, is completely for show. Violence was being provoked and heads smashed for the political purposes of one man and only one man–and
2) Americans will not be denied their Constitutional rights, regardless of who says so. This isn’t Russia, or China, or North Korea; this is the United States of America, and that means something. A lot of blood has been spilled over the last 244 years to maintain a government of, by and for the people, and it’s not going away because it’s inconvenient to the political career of its current president.
Here’s a video showing the Wall of Moms in action. I particularly applaud the maker of the sign in the pic above that reads, “You may be the FEDS, but we are the MOMS.”
