Be Very Afraid: The Green New Deal Would Destroy The American Energy Industry
Well isn’t that a goddamn shame?
It was less than three months ago that Ted Cruz’s home state of Texas suffered a major power crisis, resulting in shortages of water, food, and heat. More than 4.5 million homes and businesses were left without power, some for several days.
The state’s governor initially blamed the outages on frozen wind turbines and solar panels, though that was almost immediately exposed as bullshit. Inadequately winterized natural gas equipment was soon to be revealed to be the primary cause. Also, Texas had isolated its power grid from the two major national grids in an effort to avoid federal oversight and deregulate its energy sector, making it difficult for the state to import electricity from other states.
Over the last decade or so, many Texas millionaires playing in this space had become Texas billionaires. Who doesn’t love that? Success! Yet most of those in the Lone Star State suffered grievously.
In truth, a fraction of a fraction of Americans will bemoan the loss of what used to be the “American energy industry.”
Cruz is not an idiot, but he presumes his supporters are, and he’s been right through essentially the entirety of his political career.
