The Right Wing’s Ever Evolving Narrative
I had a sad realization during a phone call with my mom the other day. She’s a lifelong conservative, sharp as a tack at 95, and unsurprisingly, a Fox News devotee. Occasionally the topic turns to politics, and I love the opportunity to ask her what’s on her mind.
Fortunately, she’s concluded, as have so many other educated Republicans, that the GOP needs to cut its connections to Trump. We didn’t cover it directly, but she seems to have also accepted that the election was not rigged.
All that’s good, but it’s not the end of the discussion. That’s the realization: there is no end to the discussion.
There will always be a narrative that far-right “news” sources can assemble that further divides Americans and makes it impossible for this nation to adopt a set of values that support the common citizen. Fox News will never run out of incendiary QAnon-style ideas, any more than McDonald’s will run out of hamburgers and malnourished, idiot customers to whom to sell them.
Her main concern at this point happens to be that Democrats, in their quest for power, are excessively immigrant-friendly. They deliberately let Central Americans flood into our country, knowing that they’ll eventually achieve citizenship, and vote Democrat because of all the free stuff they receive. At a certain point they will have grown in numbers that make it impossible for the Republicans ever to return to power, and all this will form a dwindling spiral, resulting in majorities of Hispanics and other people who leech off of hard-working (Anglo) taxpayers.
So what happens when the southern border is under better control? New narrative.
We can all remember when it was Islam (that ostensibly hated America), Democrats are coming for your guns, climate change is a hoax pushed off on us by corrupt scientists and anti-capitalists, the Deep State, the Chinese are cheating us, the Stolen Election, January 6th wasn’t an insurrection, and Trump is the subject of so many witch hunts.
The supply is endless, and that’s sad.
