Republican Party In Peril
From this in “The Week,” rated as politically neutral:
A new deep dive into the 2020 electorate by Pew Research contains mostly bad news for Republicans, whose approaching demographic doom is less racial than it is generational. While it shouldn’t be news to anyone at this point that young voters are a solidly blue voting bloc, the more worrisome developments for the GOP are the unexpectedly elderly nature of the party’s coalition and the unyielding Democratic lean of younger voters as they age. If Pew’s numbers are to be believed, the only solidly Republican age demographic last year was 75 and over, meaning that every time the sun comes up, the GOP’s struggle to win a majority of American voters gets harder.
Precisely. And all this is exacerbated by the party’s continuing allegiance to Trump, which is pulling it hard in the direction of total lunacy. Every day, more people are coming to understand that the election wasn’t stolen. Many Republican lawmakers continue to maintain that it was, thus making the entire organization appear completely insane.
Now, let’s acknowledge that this will work for certain Republicans facing re-election in 2022. Candidates with constituencies that believe the Big Lie know that they would go down hard if they had the courage to tell the truth (which, of course, they don’t).
But, while it may work short-term, once Trump’s gone, the long-term looks quite bleak. Keep in mind that it will be years before the active issues, like the January 6th insurrection and the criminal prosecution of the 45th president are behind us. The smoke from all this will not have cleared until at best 2024.
Once that happens, it will take a long time for the GOP once more to be regarded as a credible, honest party with the well-being of the nation and its people at heart.
